Our ability to observe the world around us continues to grow at astonishing rates due to the proliferation of sensor-rich connected computing devices. This year, more than 4 billion global internet users are on track to transfer nearly a zettabyte of data over the public internet using nearly 20 billion devices. The plethora of computing power, measurement capabilities, and locations accessible by these devices is equally breathtaking, with over 100,000 different registered makes and models of devices (excluding myriad DIY, custom, and private things) capable of making more than 200 physical and statistical observations. Additionally, the number of derived statistical quantities available has also exploded, due in part to the rise of smart devices, including system-on-a-chip (SoC), mobile, and internet-of-things (IoT) devices. In this talk, I will review the historical development of the measurements, models, and methods used in these devices, from the perspective of control theory and optimization, as well as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). Examples from distributed sensing, neural networks, and intelligent systems will be highlighted. In doing so, we will see how sensor fusion relies on a convergent methodology shared by these often seemingly disparate approaches to measurement, context sensing, and estimation.
